The Asia Cup 2025 commenced today with Afghanistan facing off against Hong Kong in the opening match at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Afghanistan won the toss and elected to bat first. However, Hong Kong's bowlers made an early impact, claiming two wickets within the first six overs.

Ayush Shukla struck first, dismissing Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who had been struggling for form in the recent tri-series. Gurbaz attempted a big shot but only managed to top-edge the ball, resulting in an easy catch for Hong Kong. Shortly after, Ateeq Iqbal removed Ibrahim Zadran, who edged a back-of-a-length delivery to the wicketkeeper. These early wickets rattled Afghanistan, leaving them at 41/2 after 6 overs.

Despite the early setbacks, Afghanistan began to recover, with Sediqullah Atal and Mohammad Nabi building a partnership. Atal started aggressively, hitting a four off the first ball he faced. He also had a stroke of luck when he was dropped in the slips. Nabi also contributed with some aggressive hitting, including a four and a six off consecutive deliveries.

At the end of 7 overs, Afghanistan had reached 56/2, with Atal and Nabi at the crease. Afghanistan will be aiming to post a competitive total, while Hong Kong will be looking to maintain the pressure and take further wickets.

The Asia Cup 2025 features eight teams divided into two groups. Group A consists of India, Pakistan, Oman, and UAE, while Group B includes Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, and Sri Lanka. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super 4 stage, with the top two teams from that stage competing in the final on September 28. This year's tournament is being played in the T20 format, providing teams with crucial preparation for the upcoming T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
