Nupur Sheoran has guaranteed India's first medal at the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool. The 26-year-old heavyweight boxer secured her place in the semifinals of the women's +80kg category by defeating Oltinoy Sotimboeva of Uzbekistan.

Sheoran's journey to the medal began with a direct entry into the quarterfinals, where she faced Sotimboeva on Wednesday. After a tough fight, Nupur emerged victorious with a 4-1 decision, ensuring herself at least a bronze medal. With only ten boxers competing in the category, each win was crucial.

Nupur Sheoran comes from a family with a strong boxing legacy. She is the granddaughter of the legendary Hawa Singh, a two-time Asian Games gold medalist. Her father, Sanjay Singh, was an international boxer, and her mother, Mukesh, is an Asian medalist in basketball. Growing up in Bhiwani, Haryana, known as the "nursery of Indian boxing," Nupur was immersed in the world of sports from a young age.

Initially, Nupur was more focused on her studies, but she started boxing in 2015 after her father encouraged her. She quickly found success, winning the Haryana State sub-junior title shortly after starting. This was followed by a youth national title and five senior national titles, including three in the heavyweight category. In July 2025, Nupur won a gold medal at the World Boxing Cup in Astana, Kazakhstan, defeating Yeldana Talipova in the +80 kg category final.

Nupur's success is attributed to her hard work, dedication, and the support of her family, particularly her father, who also serves as her coach. She has also stated that she feels her grandfather's presence in every jab she throws and that her World Boxing Cup gold was for him.

While Nupur Sheoran is celebrating her medal, other Indian boxers have also been competing at the World Boxing Championships 2025. Nikhat Zareen has advanced to the quarter-finals in the women's 51kg category. Jaismine Lamboria also reached the quarter-finals with a win over Jucielen Romeu of Brazil in the women's 57kg division. However, some male boxers, including Sachin (60kg), Sumit (75kg) and Narender (90+kg) have been knocked out of the competition.
