The NHL rumor mill is churning with several intriguing storylines as teams prepare for the upcoming season. From Connor Bedard's potential contract extension with the Chicago Blackhawks to the possibility of a Hughes brothers reunion in New Jersey, and the latest on Rasmus Andersson's trade situation, here's a breakdown of what's being discussed.

Bedard Contract Talks Progressing

Chicago Blackhawks fans can breathe a sigh of relief as initial contract extension talks with Connor Bedard appear to be progressing smoothly. Bedard, who is entering the final year of his three-year entry-level contract, is eligible to become a restricted free agent on July 1st. Both Bedard and the Blackhawks have expressed mutual interest in a long-term deal. "We're both comfortable with where we're at," Bedard said. "They know I want to be there; I know they want me. So, it's really not on my mind that much, and I just think when it happens, it'll happen".

While there's no firm timeline for an agreement, the Blackhawks are likely looking to lock up their young star for the long haul. Some have speculated that Bedard's next contract could mirror those of other top players coming out of their entry-level deals, potentially around seven years with an annual cap hit of over $9 million. Bedard's current entry-level contract carries a cap hit of $950,000 per season. He has a base salary of $855,000 and a signing bonus of $95,000 in 2025-26.

Andersson Trade Rumors Persist

Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson has been the subject of trade rumors. Andersson is entering the final year of his contract, which includes a limited no-trade clause. Several teams have been linked to Andersson, including the Blue Jackets, Hurricanes, Senators, Bruins, and Canadiens.

Lias Andersson, a different player with the same last name, was traded to the Los Angeles Kings by the New York Rangers in 2020.

Hughes Brothers Reunion in New Jersey?

The possibility of Quinn Hughes joining his brothers, Jack and Luke, on the New Jersey Devils has gained momentum. Jack Hughes has publicly stated his desire to play with his older brother. "Honestly, I'm not afraid to say it. Yeah, I would love for Quinn to -- eventually I'd love to play with him," Jack said. "And whether that's in New Jersey or at what time that takes, at some point I want to play with Quinn".

Quinn Hughes is currently signed with the Vancouver Canucks through two more seasons. If he doesn't sign an extension with Vancouver, he could become an unrestricted free agent and potentially join his brothers in New Jersey. The Devils already have Jack locked in for five more years, and Luke is a restricted free agent. The Canucks' president has even floated the idea of acquiring Jack and Luke to entice Quinn to stay in Vancouver.
