Pooja Rani has guaranteed India a medal at the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, securing her spot in the semifinals of the women's 80kg category. The experienced Indian boxer showcased her skills and resilience in a hard-fought quarterfinal bout against Emilia Koterska of Poland, ultimately winning by a 3-2 split decision.

The 34-year-old Rani, who received a bye in the first round, relied on her extensive experience to overcome the teenage Polish boxer. In a tactical fight, both athletes started cautiously in the opening round, exchanging blows but struggling to land significant punches, resulting in the Pole taking the round 3-2. Rani significantly upped her performance in the second round, connecting powerful hooks to take the round on all judges' cards. By the final round, both boxers were spent, but Pooja's composure and precise backhands ensured she sealed the victory, securing her spot on the podium.

With this victory, Pooja Rani joins Jaismine Lamboria (57kg) and Nupur Sheoran (80+kg) in securing medals for India at the tournament. Nupur Sheoran had earlier confirmed India's first medal by defeating Uzbekistan's Oltinoy Sotimboeva in the women's 80+ kg quarterfinals. Jaismine Lamboria also booked her spot in the semi-finals of the 57kg category.

However, India's men's campaign faced a setback as Abhinash Jamwal lost his 65kg quarterfinal bout against Lasha Guruli of Georgia. Jadumani Singh (50kg) is the only male boxer remaining in contention, and is set to face reigning world champion Sanzhar Tashkenbay of Kazakhstan in the quarterfinals.

Pooja's journey to the semifinals hasn't been without its challenges. Her father initially disapproved of her taking up boxing. Despite these hurdles, she persevered, eventually gaining her family's support and achieving success at the national and international levels.

Looking ahead, Pooja will face local favorite Emily Asquith in the semifinals. This will be a significant test for the Indian boxer as she aims to advance to the final and compete for the gold medal.
