Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has officially joined Trabzonspor on loan for the 2025/26 season. The move comes after speculation arose regarding Onana's future with the Red Devils during the summer transfer window. The agreement is subject to international clearance and registration.

Onana's transfer to the Turkish club is a season-long loan deal, with no purchase option included. Manchester United will not receive a loan fee as part of the agreement. According to reports, this move presents Onana with an opportunity to regain his form and confidence while playing in Turkey.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper arrived at Old Trafford in July 2023 for a reported £47.2 million. Despite initial hopes, Onana's time with Manchester United has been marked by costly errors, leading to criticism of his performances. United have been said to be favoring alternative options.

Several factors contributed to Onana's decision to move to Trabzonspor. It is understood that Onana will earn more money at Trabzonspor, and will benefit from a flat 20% tax rate in the Super Lig. With United not in the Champions League, squad members will not receive the 25% salary increase that comes with participation in that competition.

Prior to the loan move, Onana believed he would remain at United. However, the signing of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on the Premier League's transfer deadline day gave manager Ruben Amorim four goalkeepers, including Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton.

Onana's contract with Manchester United runs until June 2028, with the option for a further 12-month extension. Before Lammens signed, club sources said that they were at ease regarding having four goalkeepers, pointing to the expectation that Onana will be part of Cameroon's squad for the Africa Cup of Nations and so unavailable for up to six weeks, starting on December 21.
