Manchester United's goalkeeper André Onana has officially sealed a season-long loan move to Turkish Süper Lig side Trabzonspor. The transfer comes after a difficult period for the Cameroonian international at Old Trafford.

Onana's move to Trabzonspor aims to provide him with an opportunity to regain his form and confidence after error-strewn performances for Manchester United. Despite being initially considered the first-choice goalkeeper, Onana fell down the pecking order following the arrival of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp. Altay Bayindir has been preferred in the Premier League, further limiting Onana's opportunities. His only appearance this season was in the Carabao Cup against Grimsby Town, where he was at fault for both goals in a loss.

The loan deal with Trabzonspor runs until June 2026 and does not include an option to buy. Reports indicate that Onana will receive a higher salary at Trabzonspor, along with bonuses and a signing-on fee. Manchester United will not receive a loan fee for the transfer.

Onana joined Manchester United in July 2023 from Inter Milan for an initial fee of €51 million (£43.8m), with a potential €4m in add-ons. During his time with the Red Devils, he made 102 appearances and was part of the squad that won the FA Cup in his first season. However, his performances were often criticized, and he struggled to replicate the form he showed at Inter.

Prior to the move to Trabzonspor, West Ham United were offered the chance to sign Onana on loan, but they declined. Several other clubs, including Al Shabab, Al Nassr, Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray, and Inter Milan, were also rumored to be interested in him.

With Onana's departure, Ruben Amorim will have to choose between Altay Bayindir and Senne Lammens as the first-choice goalkeeper. Tom Heaton remains at the club as a backup option.

Onana received a warm welcome from Trabzonspor fans upon his arrival in Turkey. He hopes to rediscover his form in the Süper Lig and help Trabzonspor achieve their goals for the season.

In other Manchester United news, Tyrell Malacia, who was deemed surplus to requirements, is also expected to leave the club and join Turkish side Eyupspor.
