Oilers Considering Multi-Year Contract Extensions for Two Key Skaters to Secure Future Team Success

The Edmonton Oilers are reportedly considering extending contracts for two prominent players: winger Vasily Podkolzin and defenseman Jake Walman. According to hockey insider Bob Stauffer, Podkolzin could be offered a three-year deal, while Walman might receive a six-year extension.

Vasily Podkolzin, acquired in a trade from the Vancouver Canucks during the 2024 offseason, has seemingly solidified his position as a top-six forward. Last season, he frequently played alongside Leon Draisaitl, showcasing his potential to contribute offensively. In 82 games, Podkolzin recorded 8 goals and 16 assists, totaling 24 points. Coach Kris Knoblauch has expressed admiration for Podkolzin's tenacious style of play, suggesting that an extension at the right price would greatly benefit the Oilers, given his versatility within the lineup.

Jake Walman, 29, experienced a breakthrough season with the San Jose Sharks in 2024-25 before being traded to the Oilers. In 65 games, he tallied 7 goals and 33 assists, accumulating 40 points. During the playoffs, Walman added 10 points in 22 games, contributing to the Oilers' run to the Stanley Cup Final. Retaining Walman, a top-four puck-moving defenseman, is viewed as crucial for the Oilers' championship aspirations. While a six-year contract may not age perfectly, it would secure Walman's prime years and prevent the potential detriment of losing him for nothing.

These potential extensions come at a time when the NHL's salary cap is projected to increase to $104 million in 2026–27. This boost could provide the Oilers with sufficient financial flexibility to accommodate these moves. However, the situation could become more challenging if Connor McDavid receives a significant raise in his next contract.

McDavid's current eight-year, $100 million contract, signed in 2017, is nearing its end, placing pressure on the Oilers to maintain their star player's satisfaction while demonstrating their ability to contend for a championship. McDavid has acknowledged the gravity of his upcoming contract decision, emphasizing that it will define the trajectory of his career. He stated that all options are on the table, including short-term, long-term, or even no term, underscoring the importance of making the right choice.

While McDavid is taking his time with the decision, he has made it clear that he has every intention of winning in Edmonton. He understands that his contract impacts not only himself and his family, but also his teammates and the entire Oilers organization. This perspective has led him to carefully consider all factors before committing to a new deal.
