Arne Slot has defended Liverpool's new signing Alexander Isak amidst criticism regarding the circumstances of his departure from Newcastle United. Isak, who secured a £125 million move to Anfield on deadline day, was under scrutiny for actions perceived as forcing his exit from St. James' Park. These actions included missing Newcastle's pre-season opener, refusing to join the club's tour of China, and not participating in their initial Premier League games.

Slot addressed the media, expressing his view that such a situation would not occur at Liverpool, implying that the club would rather sell a player who clearly desires to leave. He acknowledged the criticism Isak has faced, noting that in football, opinions fluctuate, with players being cheered at times and criticized at others. He referenced Isak's past popularity, recalling the positive reception he received after winning the League Cup.

The Liverpool manager stated that he hasn't spoken extensively with Isak, only having a phone call after he signed and exchanging a few texts. Slot mentioned that he generally leaves players to their national team managers during international breaks. He added that he needs to get to know Isak better as a person in the coming weeks. Slot emphasized that while a player's character is important, Liverpool primarily signs players for their qualities. He also stated his familiarity with Isak's quality as a player from facing him in previous matches.

Slot also commented on Isak's fitness level, suggesting that fans should be patient as the forward builds up his match fitness. He noted that Isak missed a proper pre-season and several months of team sessions. As a result, Slot doesn't expect Isak to play a full 90 minutes in every game for the next few weeks. He clarified that Isak's signing is a long-term investment, spanning six years, and his workload will be managed accordingly.

Despite the limited interaction, Slot seems impressed with Isak's attitude. He also acknowledged the difficulty of leaving Federico Chiesa out of the Champions League squad due to Isak's arrival. Slot was pleased with Chiesa's professional response, as the player expressed his commitment to helping the team in other competitions and demonstrated his dedication in training.

Liverpool have had a strong start to the season with three wins from three. However, Slot faces an injury setback with Curtis Jones being unavailable for the game against Burnley. On a positive note, Jeremie Frimpong has returned to training after a hamstring injury.
