Since Gautam Gambhir's arrival as head coach, Indian cricket has been buzzing with fresh strategies and selection choices, and Ravichandran Ashwin, the veteran off-spinner, has been keenly observing these changes. Ashwin recently shared his insights on India's Asia Cup 2025 playing XI, particularly focusing on the inclusion of Sanju Samson and the exclusion of Arshdeep Singh.

One of the most talked-about decisions has been the inclusion of Sanju Samson in the playing XI for the Asia Cup 2025 opener against the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Ashwin revealed a fascinating conversation he had with Samson, where the young batsman shared details about his interaction with Gautam Gambhir. According to Samson, Gambhir has assured him of consistent backing, stating that even if he were to get out for a duck in 21 consecutive innings, he would still be picked for the 22nd. Ashwin has dubbed this unwavering support as "Project Sanju Samson," praising the faith shown in Samson by both Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav.

Ashwin acknowledged the potential tactical challenges of fitting Samson into the batting order. While Samson typically bats in the top three, the match situation might require him to bat lower, potentially at No. 5. Ashwin noted that this could be "a bit unfair on him," but expressed his happiness that Samson is getting opportunities at No. 3. In the match against the UAE, Samson was slotted in at No. 5 but did not get a chance to bat as India chased down the 58-run target with ease.

On the other hand, Arshdeep Singh's exclusion from the playing XI has raised eyebrows. Ashwin expressed his surprise at this decision, especially considering Arshdeep's consistent presence in the Indian team and his impressive performances in the past. Instead of Arshdeep, the team management opted for a spin-heavy attack, including Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, and Axar Patel. Ashwin pointed out that this preference for spinners and batting depth seems to be a recurring theme under Gautam Gambhir's coaching. He highlighted that Arshdeep had also been left out of the playing XI during the Champions Trophy 2025.

Ashwin believes that Arshdeep's exclusion might be influenced by the conditions in Dubai, which are known to favor spinners. He also noted that Gautam Gambhir has historically favored spin-heavy strategies, recalling Gambhir's successful stint with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), where he heavily relied on spinners. However, Ashwin doesn't completely agree with this approach. While he acknowledges the strength of India's batting lineup, he believes that an extra seamer is essential, especially when playing under lights. He feels that relying too heavily on spin could be risky.

Despite his reservations, Ashwin doesn't suggest dropping Kuldeep or Varun to accommodate an extra seamer. Instead, he suggests that a different batting lineup change might be necessary, especially with Abhishek Sharma also contributing with the ball. Ashwin emphasized the importance of bowlers in winning championships and believes that a balanced attack is crucial for India's success. With India set to face Pakistan on September 14 in Dubai, it remains to be seen whether Arshdeep Singh will make a comeback into the playing XI.
