India is expressing confidence in its readiness to host mega-events like the Olympics, according to Sports Secretary Hari Ranjan Rao. Rao stated that the government is dedicated to establishing a lasting sporting legacy through hosting such large-scale events. India has officially bid to host the 2036 Olympics, with Ahmedabad as the proposed host city.

Rao believes that India is prepared for a mega-event like the Olympics, particularly in terms of infrastructure. He pointed out that the infrastructure built for previous multi-sport events like the Commonwealth Games is still in use. According to Rao, creating infrastructure for the Olympics is feasible, considering India's current growth trajectory and overall infrastructure development. He emphasized that good-quality sporting infrastructure is essential for future generations, regardless of whether India hosts the Olympics.

The Sports Secretary highlighted the importance of both governmental and private sector involvement in sports development. While the government can handle capital expenditure, the corporate sector can contribute by bridging gaps in areas such as athlete training, exposure methods, and sports science support.

India's ambition to host the 2036 Olympics reflects a broader vision for sports development and international cooperation. The Indian delegation presented their vision to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), emphasizing the philosophy of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam," which means "the world is one family," to promote unity and global collaboration.

However, the IOC has raised concerns regarding governance issues within the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), the prevalence of doping, and the country's sporting performance. To address these concerns, the IOC has withheld athlete welfare grants to the Indian body until the situation improves. Infighting within the IOA, particularly between President P.T. Usha and the Executive Council, has also been a point of concern, overshadowing preparations for multi-disciplinary Games.

Despite these challenges, India is taking steps to strengthen its Olympic bid. The success of India's bid will depend on addressing the issues highlighted by the IOC, including improving governance within the IOA and enhancing the country's sporting performance. The Sports Secretary plays a crucial role in coordinating national-level planning, overseeing government investments, and liaising with international partners, including the IOC.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is the governing body for the Olympic Movement and Commonwealth Games in India. It selects athletes to represent India at these events and manages Indian teams. The IOA was founded in 1927 and officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee.
