Filip Eriksson, a 20-year-old prospect for the Montreal Canadiens, has recently captured attention with a stellar performance in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). Selected by the Canadiens in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft (165th overall), Eriksson was initially viewed as a long-term project. However, his recent SHL debut suggests he may be developing faster than anticipated.

In his first game of the SHL season with Luleå HF, Eriksson exploded for three goals and one assist. This performance surpassed half of his offensive output from the previous season, where he recorded two goals and four assists in 37 games with Växjö HC.

The SHL is known to be a challenging league for young players, especially centers, who have significant defensive responsibilities. The fact that Eriksson was regularly trusted to play for Växjö as a teenager was seen as a positive sign.

Prior to his recent success, scouting reports highlighted Eriksson's strengths. One report from January 9, 2025, emphasized his high work rate and attention to detail. Another report from October 3, 2024, described him as a slick winger with quick hands who can create space for himself. A further report from February 28, 2024, noted his strong performance in all aspects of the game, including his defensive awareness. These scouting reports suggest that Eriksson possesses a well-rounded skillset.

Montreal Canadiens drafted him with the expectation that his development curve would be gradual, but his hockey IQ and versatility already suggested he had more to offer than his numbers indicated. This season, Eriksson plays for Luleå HF. If his debut game was any indication, the fit might be perfect. Eriksson erupted for three goals and an assist in his very first SHL contest with Luleå, instantly surpassing half of his offensive output from all of last season.

Eriksson's strong start to the SHL season has not gone unnoticed. His performance has generated excitement among fans and management, prompting closer observation of his development. While it is still early in the season, Eriksson's impressive debut suggests that he has the potential to become a valuable asset for the Montreal Canadiens in the future.
