The city of Manchester is in mourning following the death of boxing legend Ricky Hatton at the age of 46. Hatton, a former world champion and a devoted Manchester City fan, was found dead at his home on Sunday, September 14, 2025. News of his passing cast a pall over the highly anticipated Manchester derby, but it also served as a source of inspiration for the City players.

In a touching tribute, Phil Foden and Pep Guardiola dedicated Manchester City's dominant 3-0 victory over Manchester United to Hatton. Foden, a lifelong City supporter himself, emphasized the extra motivation he felt going into the game. "100 percent," Foden said when asked if the win was for Hatton. "I had extra motivation going into the game. It was for him and his family and for the people suffering right now. The lads gave everything. It wasn't a pretty match but it was all for him".

Guardiola echoed Foden's sentiments, acknowledging Hatton's significance to the club and its supporters. "I have been here 10 years and there have been a lot of minutes of silence but I don't remember anything as intense as today," Guardiola said. "Thank you so much to the Man United fans that they behaved and applauded it. I know he was a world champion in boxing and it was a special moment". He further added, "No words can contain the pain the family feel right now for this loss but, of course, we are close. I know how incredible a Man City fan (he was). He would live the bad moments and the good moments of the last 10-15 years".

The derby itself was a display of Manchester City's dominance. Foden opened the scoring with a header in the 18th minute, assisted by Jeremy Doku. Erling Haaland then took over, scoring two goals in the second half to secure the victory. Doku, who provided assists for both Foden's and Haaland's goals, also dedicated the win to Hatton. "The atmosphere was incredible and it was very sad to hear [of Ricky's passing]," Doku said. "We know how important this game is, and this win for him. This is football, but we know how much football can change people's lives so we were happy we could dedicate this win to him".

Hatton was more than just a fan; he was an integral part of the Manchester City community. Known as "The Hitman," he famously wore sky blue shorts and used "Blue Moon" as his walkout song throughout his career. The club expressed its devastation at his passing, acknowledging him as "one of City's most loved and revered supporters".

Hatton's death is not being treated as suspicious. His passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the sporting world, highlighting his impact and popularity. Manchester United also extended their condolences to Hatton's family and friends.

Phil Foden, the Stockport-born midfielder, has been a key player for Manchester City. Pep Guardiola, since joining Manchester City in 2016, has led the club to numerous titles, including multiple Premier League titles. The dedication of the derby victory to Ricky Hatton is a testament to the deep connection between the club, its players, and its fans, especially in times of sorrow.
