Sri Lanka survived a major scare against Hong Kong in their Asia Cup 2025 Group B clash, ultimately securing a narrow four-wicket victory. Pathum Nissanka's composed half-century and a late, fiery cameo from Wanindu Hasaranga proved crucial in guiding the defending champions to their second consecutive win in the tournament.

Hong Kong, after losing their opening match against Afghanistan, were desperate for a win to stay in contention for a Super Four spot. They put up a competitive total of 149/4, with Nizakat Khan leading from the front with an unbeaten half-century. Khan's 52 off 38 balls, coupled with Anshuman Rath's 48, helped Hong Kong frustrate the Sri Lankan bowlers.

Sri Lanka's chase began shakily, with Kusal Mendis falling early. Pathum Nissanka, however, anchored the innings with a well-paced 68 off 44 balls. He initially played defensively before accelerating after the halfway mark. Nissanka found support in Kamil Mishara and Kusal Perera, who contributed 19 and 20 runs respectively.

Just as Sri Lanka appeared to be cruising towards victory, Hong Kong fought back, with skipper Yasim Murtaza leading the charge. They triggered a collapse, taking four quick wickets and reducing Sri Lanka from 119/2 to 127/6. Nissanka, Perera, Kamindu Mendis, and Charith Asalanka all fell in quick succession, giving Hong Kong a glimmer of hope.

With the pressure mounting, Wanindu Hasaranga stepped up with a vital cameo. He smashed an unbeaten 20 off just nine balls, including two fours and a six, to see his team home with seven balls to spare. Hasaranga's late fireworks ensured that Sri Lanka avoided a potentially embarrassing defeat.

Despite the victory, Sri Lanka's performance was far from convincing. They struggled early in their innings and were sloppy in the field, giving Hong Kong opportunities to get back into the game. Hong Kong also didn't help their cause, dropping more than 11 catches. However, Nissanka's consistency and Hasaranga's explosive hitting ultimately proved enough to secure the win.

With this win, Sri Lanka moved to the top of Group B and are now strong contenders for a Super Four spot. Hong Kong, on the other hand, ended their Asia Cup campaign without a win.
