Gio Reyna's Uncertain Future: USMNT Star Sees Another Coach Depart as Seoane is Out at Gladbach

Gerardo Seoane's tenure as Borussia Mönchengladbach's head coach has come to an abrupt end after a mere three Bundesliga games into the 2025-26 season. The club announced the dismissal on Monday, citing a disappointing start to the season as the primary reason. This decision means that USMNT midfielder Gio Reyna faces yet another coaching change in his club career.

Mönchengladbach's sporting director, Roland Virkus, stated that the club had "lost faith that a turnaround with Gerardo can succeed". This lack of confidence stemmed from the team's winless streak, which extended to ten Bundesliga matches dating back to April. The team's poor performance in their opening matches of the season further exacerbated the situation. They have only managed to secure one point from a goalless draw against Hamburg. They also suffered defeats against VfB Stuttgart (1-0) and Werder Bremen (4-0). Alongside Hamburg, Mönchengladbach is one of the only teams in the league that is yet to score a goal this season.

Seoane's only victory during this period came against a fifth-tier club in the German Cup in August. His overall record with Gladbach was 25 wins, 20 draws, and 33 losses in 78 competitive games. While he guided the team to a seventh-placed finish in his first campaign, they slipped to 13th the following season.

Eugen Polanski, the coach of Mönchengladbach's under-23 team, will take over first-team duties on an interim basis. Polanski is familiar with Armenian national team striker Grant-Leon Ranos, and it remains to be seen how much playing time Ranos will receive under his leadership.

The coaching change at Borussia Mönchengladbach marks another turning point in Gio Reyna's club career. Reyna joined the team from Borussia Dortmund just last month and made his debut in the 4-0 loss against Werder Bremen. With Seoane's departure, Reyna will have to adapt to a new coach and potentially a different playing style. It also raises questions about Reyna's role and future with the club. Despite the initial excitement surrounding his move, the midfielder now faces uncertainty as the team undergoes a period of transition.

There is speculation that Pellegrino Matarazzo, an American coach who previously managed Hoffenheim, is a potential candidate for the head coach position.

Seoane's dismissal reflects a broader trend of impatience in professional soccer, where coaches are often judged harshly based on short-term results. Despite the club's investment in players and Seoane's efforts to build a new era, the lack of immediate success led to his departure.
