Thomas Partey's return to North London with Villarreal to face Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League has been overshadowed by his looming court appearance on Wednesday. The former Arsenal midfielder, who joined the Spanish club on a free transfer this summer, is facing serious charges of rape and sexual assault.

Partey is scheduled to appear at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday morning to answer five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. The charges relate to alleged incidents involving three women between 2021 and 2022. He denies all charges, and his lawyer has stated that he welcomes the opportunity to clear his name.

Despite the pending legal proceedings, Partey is part of the Villarreal squad that traveled to London for the Champions League match against Tottenham on Tuesday night. The situation is extraordinary, marking Partey's first match in the UK since being charged. His presence is expected to draw a hostile reception at Tottenham's stadium.

Villarreal manager Marcelino has addressed the situation, stating he believes Partey is mentally and technically prepared to play. He emphasized Partey's experience and ability, expressing confidence in his readiness for the game. "I am totally convinced that he is mentally prepared and technically prepared to play," Marcelino said. "For sure he will be ready." He also highlighted Partey's positive integration into the team and his potential to return to his top level.

Marcelino sought to shift the focus back to football, reminding reporters that Partey is presumed innocent until proven guilty. He expressed concern that the conversation was dominated by the legal issues rather than the upcoming match. "We're interpreting stuff and talking about a player that could be totally innocent," he said.

Partey's move to Villarreal followed the expiration of his Arsenal contract. His signing sparked protests in Spain and among Arsenal supporters' groups in London. Arsenal Supporters Against Sexual Violence demonstrated outside his court appearance in August, aiming to disrupt the silence surrounding the issue and support their club.

Partey's bail conditions include preventing him from contacting the alleged victims and requiring him to notify police of any address changes or international travel. He is believed to have agreed to a one-year contract with Villarreal, with an option for a further 12 months. The opportunity to play in the Champions League was reportedly a key factor in his decision. He also had offers from Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
