The Laver Cup is back, promising another thrilling edition of intense team competition and showcasing some of the world's best men's tennis players. From September 19-21, 2025, the Chase Center in San Francisco, California, will host the eighth edition of this prestigious tournament. This year marks a significant shift with tennis legends Andre Agassi and Yannick Noah taking the reins as captains of Team World and Team Europe, respectively.
The Laver Cup pits six of the best men's tennis players from Europe against six of their counterparts from the rest of the world. Over three days, the teams engage in a series of singles and doubles matches, accumulating points to determine the ultimate champion. This year, Team Europe will be led by captain Yannick Noah and vice-captain Tim Henman, featuring a powerful lineup including Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Holger Rune, Casper Ruud, Jakub Mensik, and Flavio Cobolli. Team World, under the guidance of captain Andre Agassi and vice-captain Pat Rafter, counters with Taylor Fritz, Alex de Minaur, Francisco Cerundolo, Alex Michelsen, Joao Fonseca, and Reilly Opelka.
The event consists of five sessions played over three days. A total of 12 matches are played — nine singles and three doubles. All players must compete in at least one singles match during the first two days, and no player can play singles more than twice during the three days. At least four of the six players must play doubles. Each match win is worth one point on Friday, two points on Saturday, and three points on Sunday. The first team to reach 13 points wins the Laver Cup. If the score is tied after 12 matches, a final doubles match is played to determine the winner. Matches are best of three sets, with a 10-point tiebreak used in place of a third set. No doubles combination is played more than once.
The daily schedule includes both day and night sessions. On Friday, September 19, and Saturday, September 20, the day session begins at 1 p.m. PT, followed by the night session at 7 p.m. PT. Sunday, September 21, starts earlier with the day session commencing at 12 p.m. PT.
For the first time since the event's inception in 2017, there are new captains: Yannick Noah (Team Europe) and Andre Agassi (Team World). It was decided prior to the seventh edition of the Laver Cup in 2024 that John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg would step down, and they have been replaced by Agassi and Noah for 2025. Agassi has expressed his enthusiasm for his new role, "Captain's role means helping young players rise; this team has a lot of promise". Noah also conveyed confidence in his team, "Leading Europe is an honour; we respect the heritage of this event and will aim to uphold it with passion".
