In a crucial encounter at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, Sri Lanka defeated Afghanistan by 6 wickets, securing their place in the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup 2025 and simultaneously ensuring Bangladesh's qualification. Afghanistan, despite a late surge, were knocked out of the tournament.

Chasing a target of 170, Sri Lanka reached the milestone in 18.4 overs, with Kusal Mendis leading the charge with an impressive, unbeaten 74 off 52 balls. Kamindu Mendis also contributed a vital cameo of 26 runs from 13 balls.

The match was not without its tense moments. Afghanistan, after winning the toss and electing to bat first, found themselves in early trouble, slumping to 79/6 in the 13th over. However, a remarkable counter-attack led by Mohammad Nabi, who smashed 60 off just 22 balls, propelled them to a respectable total of 169/8. Nabi's innings included three boundaries and six towering sixes. Rashid Khan also contributed with a valuable 24 off 23 balls.

Nuwan Thushara was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers, claiming 4 wickets for just 18 runs. His early strikes rattled the Afghan top order, putting them on the back foot. Dunith Wellalage and Dushmantha Chameera also chipped in with crucial wickets.

In the chase, Sri Lanka lost Pathum Nissanka early, but Kusal Mendis anchored the innings, building partnerships with Kusal Perera and Charith Asalanka. Despite losing a few wickets in the middle overs, Sri Lanka remained in control, reaching the target with ease. Kusal Mendis was named the Player of the Match for his match-winning innings.

With this result, the Super 4 lineup is complete. India and Pakistan have already qualified from Group A. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will now join them from Group B. The Super 4 stage will be a round-robin format, with each team playing the other three once. The top two teams from this stage will then advance to the final, scheduled for September 28 in Dubai.

The Super 4 stage is set to begin on September 20, with matches to be played in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. A highly anticipated clash between India and Pakistan is scheduled for September 21 in Dubai. Other matches include Pakistan versus the second-placed team from Group B on September 23 in Abu Dhabi. India will then face the second-placed team from Group B on September 24 and the top team from Group B on September 26.

The Asia Cup 2025, being held in the United Arab Emirates from September 9 to 28, features eight teams competing in the T20 format. The tournament consists of a group stage, followed by the Super 4, and then the final.
