The Carolina Hurricanes' 2025 training camp is underway, offering fans and analysts a first glimpse at the team's new acquisitions and potential line combinations. With on-ice activities commencing on September 18, 2025, here are three early takeaways from the first few days of camp.

1. Logan Stankoven Gets a Shot at 2C

One of the most significant questions heading into training camp was who would fill the second-line center position. While Jesperi Kotkaniemi was a potential candidate, the early practices have seen Logan Stankoven slotted between Andrei Svechnikov and Jackson Blake on the second line. Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour mentioned the possibility of trying Stankoven at center during camp to evaluate his fit. Stankoven's experience at center from his junior hockey days with the Kamloops Blazers could be an asset. Brind'Amour has emphasized the importance of understanding the nuances of playing center and being willing to learn. While it's still early, Stankoven's performance in the first few practices suggests he may get an extended look in that role.

2. New Additions Integrate Quickly

The 2025 training camp marks the first time fans are seeing newly acquired players Nikolaj Ehlers and K'Andre Miller on the ice with the Hurricanes. Ehlers, acquired during free agency, has been skating on the top line with Sebastian Aho and Seth Jarvis. Miller, another key acquisition, was held out of practice due to a minor off-season injury. Alexander Nikishin is also participating in his first NHL training camp after moving from Russia. Determining who Nikishin will be paired with on defense is something to watch. The quick integration of Ehlers into the top line suggests he could be a key offensive contributor this season.

3. Cayden Primeau's Opportunity

Goaltender Cayden Primeau, acquired in the offseason, is starting training camp with the main group. After a 22-win season with the Laval Rocket in the American Hockey League, Primeau is expected to be the Hurricanes' third goalie. He will wear number 55, the same number his father, Keith, wore when he captained the team. The Hurricanes' first preseason game is on September 22 against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
