Devdutt Padikkal is reportedly under consideration for the upcoming Test series against the West Indies, scheduled to begin on October 2, 2025, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The selection committee is expected to announce the squad around September 23 or 24. The series marks India's second assignment in the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle and their first home series since New Zealand's 3-0 victory last year. The second Test is slated to be held in New Delhi from October 10-14.

Padikkal's strong form in domestic cricket has made him a potential candidate for the number three spot, especially after inconsistent performances from other players in recent series. He recently scored 150 for India 'A' against Australia 'A' in a four-day game in Lucknow, further solidifying his case for selection. Prior to that, the Karnataka batsman scored a half-century playing for South Zone against North Zone in the Duleep Trophy.

Selectors are looking at Padikkal, who was part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy squad and missed the England tour due to injury. He has transformed into a middle-order player in red-ball cricket.

Karun Nair, who made a comeback to the Test team after a gap of nearly seven years, may be dropped. Although Nair was rewarded with a selection for the England tour because of his consistent performance in domestic cricket, he only managed one half-century in the final match at The Oval. Selectors have expressed concerns not only over the quantity of runs but also the manner of his dismissals.

The likely squad for the Test series against the West Indies includes Shubman Gill (c), Yashasvi Jaiswal, and K.L. Rahul. With Rishabh Pant still recovering from injury, Dhruv Jurel is expected to take over as the wicketkeeper.

The West Indies team has recalled batsmen Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Alick Athanaze for the Test tour of India. The series marks the West Indies' first Test visit to India since 2018 and is part of the World Test Championship.
