Mike Komisarek, born on January 19, 1982, in West Islip, New York, is a former professional ice hockey defenseman whose career spanned from 2002 to 2014. Selected 7th overall in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens after two seasons with the University of Michigan, Komisarek was known for his size, physicality, and shot-blocking ability. While he achieved notable success with the Canadiens, his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs is often viewed as a disappointment.
Komisarek's journey to the NHL began with youth hockey on Long Island and included a stint with the New England Jr. Coyotes of the Eastern Junior Hockey League (EJHL). He then joined USA Hockey's National Team Development Program. From 2000 to 2002, he played college hockey at the University of Michigan, amassing 46 points and 145 penalty minutes in 81 games. During his time with the Wolverines, he earned several honors, including being named to the AHCA All-America West First Team and CCHA Best Defensive Defenseman in his sophomore year. He also helped Michigan reach the NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Championship twice.
Komisarek's NHL career started with the Montreal Canadiens in the 2002-03 season. He quickly established himself as a reliable defenseman, known for hisStay-at-home style. By the mid-2000s, he was a key player for the Canadiens, logging significant minutes and providing a physical presence on the ice. In the 2007-08 season, he led the league with 227 blocked shots and ranked second in hits with 266, despite playing only 75 games. His strong play earned him an NHL All-Star Game selection in 2009, where he was named a starter alongside his Canadiens defensive partner, Andrei Markov.
In July 2009, Komisarek signed a five-year, $22.5 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs. At the time, it was a substantial contract for a defensive defenseman. However, his tenure in Toronto did not live up to expectations. His first season was cut short due to a shoulder injury, and he struggled to adapt to the evolving NHL, which was becoming faster and more focused on puck possession. He appeared in 551 NHL games, recording 14 goals and 67 assists.
After failing to meet expectations in Toronto, Komisarek was placed on waivers in March 2013 and assigned to the Toronto Marlies of the AHL. He was eventually bought out by the Maple Leafs in July 2013. He then signed a one-year contract with the Carolina Hurricanes.
Komisarek represented the United States in several international tournaments, including the World Championships in 2006 and 2011. He was also selected for the 2010 Winter Olympics team but had to withdraw due to injury.
Following his retirement from professional hockey in 2014, Komisarek returned to the University of Michigan to complete his undergraduate degree. He also joined the Michigan Hockey coaching staff as an undergraduate student assistant. Later, in 2017, he was hired by the Buffalo Sabres as a professional development coach. Currently, he works for the Vancouver Canucks in player development.
