Edmonton Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch is planning to start the 2025-26 NHL season with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl playing on the same line. This decision comes as a surprise to some, as the two superstars have typically been deployed on separate lines to maximize the Oilers' offensive depth. However, Knoblauch believes that uniting McDavid and Draisaitl will ultimately benefit the entire team.

Knoblauch explained that when McDavid and Draisaitl play on separate lines, logging 21-22 minutes each, there isn't much ice time left for the third and fourth lines, which can leave those players feeling disengaged. By playing them together, the other three lines can stay in the game, play their regular shifts more often, and play more to their identity. He added that players who might not be top-six caliber are sometimes forced to play a top-six role when paired with McDavid or Draisaitl, which isn't necessarily their natural game. When the two stars are together, the other players can simply play to their strengths.

The decision to unite McDavid and Draisaitl is also influenced by the absence of Zach Hyman, who is expected to miss the first month of the season due to a wrist injury. With Hyman sidelined, Knoblauch is looking for someone to fill his spot on the top line. Trent Frederic will get the first opportunity to play alongside McDavid and Draisaitl. Knoblauch expressed confidence in Frederic, stating that he "doesn't get enough appreciation for his skills" and is strong on the wall, good at breaking pucks out, and has good hands around the net. These are the qualities Knoblauch deems most important for a player skating with McDavid and Draisaitl.

While some may see this as a temporary fix while Hyman recovers, Knoblauch has indicated it could be a longer-term plan. He wants to see what Frederic can bring to the top line and how the team performs with McDavid and Draisaitl together.

The Oilers are under immense pressure to perform this season. After losing in the Stanley Cup Finals in back-to-back years, the team is determined to win a championship. There is also the added pressure of Connor McDavid potentially entering the season without a contract extension. A strong start to the season is crucial, and Knoblauch believes that playing McDavid and Draisaitl together gives the Oilers the best chance to achieve that. McDavid has also mentioned the need for a good start multiple times during training camp.

The Oilers' second to fourth lines should be able to contribute offensively, and the team's defensemen are skilled at moving the puck. Last season, Edmonton had four of the top-35 even-strength scoring defenders. Knoblauch is hopeful that the team's depth and defensive capabilities will complement the McDavid-Draisaitl line and lead to a successful season.
