The Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators face off tonight at Scotiabank Arena for their second preseason game, continuing their Ontario rivalry. Puck drop is scheduled for just after 7:00 p.m. ET, and the game will be broadcast on TSN4 in the Maple Leafs region and TSN5 in the Senators region.
In their first preseason game on Sunday, the Maple Leafs emerged victorious with a 4-3 win over the Senators. However, that game featured a lineup of mostly depth players for the Leafs against a more regular Senators roster. Tonight's game will see a reversal of that trend, with the Maple Leafs icing a lineup that closely resembles their expected opening night roster, while the Senators are expected to showcase more rookies and players vying for a roster spot.
Maple Leafs Lineup
The Maple Leafs will give fans their first look at several key players. Matias Maccelli will skate alongside Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies on the top line. The second line features Bobby McMann, John Tavares, and William Nylander. Dakota Joshua will play with Luke Haymes and Nick Robertson. Easton Cowan will join Steven Lorentz and Scott Laughton on a line.
On defense, Morgan Rielly, Brandon Carlo, Jake McCabe, Chris Tanev, and Oliver Ekman-Larsson are all set to make their preseason debuts. Ben Danford, who impressed in the first game, will get another opportunity on the back end. Dennis Hildeby is expected to start in goal for Toronto, with Artur Akhtyamov backing him up.
Senators Lineup
The Senators are expected to ice a "B" lineup, giving opportunities to prospects and players looking to make an impression. Dylan Cozens, Arthur Kaliyev, and Fabian Zetterlund are slated to form the top line, with Nick Cousins, Shane Pinto, and Michael Amadio rounding out the top six. Jake Sanderson and Carter Yakemchuk are expected to be the top defensive pairing. According to TSN's Claire Hanna, Brady Tkachuk, Tim Stutzle, Ridly Greig, Drake Batherson, and Jordan Spence are unlikely to play.
Of the skaters expected to play for Ottawa, only seven are considered likely to be on the team's roster this season. Kaliyev and Olle Lycksell, who both scored in the first preseason game, are candidates for the 13th forward position. Donovan Sebrango and Nik Matinpalo could be call-up options on defense. Tyler Kleven, who left Sunday's game after a collision, did not practice Tuesday, but his injury is not considered serious.
With the Maple Leafs fielding a more experienced lineup, fans will be eager to see how the team's stars perform and how the new additions fit into the system. For the Senators, this game is an opportunity for young players and hopefuls to showcase their potential and make a case for a roster spot.
