Andersson's Re-Signing Hinges on Flames' Risky Offer: Will It Be Enough to Keep Him?

As the Calgary Flames approach the 2025-26 season, a significant question mark hangs over their blue line: the future of Rasmus Andersson. While trade rumors have swirled around the Flames' number one defenseman, a long-term extension with the team isn't out of the question.

TSN's Pierre LeBrun reported that neither Andersson nor the Flames are completely закрыв the door on extension talks. The team has suggested they will evaluate how the season begins before revisiting the possibility of a new contract.

Andersson, who will be 29 next summer, is entering the final year of his contract. He was almost traded to the Vegas Golden Knights, but the deal fell through. According to LeBrun, Andersson might consider re-signing with Calgary if presented with an eight-year offer. However, it's unclear if the Flames are willing to commit to that length.

An eight-year deal is risky for the Flames. While Andersson is a solid top-four defenseman who plays significant minutes, he will be in his late 30s at the end of the contract. The Flames must weigh that against the rising salary cap and increasing player salaries.

Despite the possibility of an extension, a trade remains the most likely outcome. Andersson has a six-team no-trade list, but is reportedly open to signing an extension with Vegas and the Dallas Stars. The Los Angeles Kings also showed interest last season, but Andersson was unwilling to sign an extension with them. The Ottawa Senators are reportedly on his no-trade list.

If Andersson makes it to unrestricted free agency, he has a very real chance of being the top defenseman available on the market. As a right-handed defenseman who can play top-pairing minutes, he would be a highly sought-after commodity.

Last season, Andersson had 11 goals and 31 points in 81 games, averaging 24 minutes of ice time per night.
