The game began with Fulham taking an early lead through Raul Jimenez, who headed in from a corner in the 3rd minute, threatening to extend Villa's frustration. However, Watkins leveled the score in the 37th minute, lobbing the ball over Fulham's goalkeeper Bernd Leno for his first goal of the season.

The second half saw Villa take control with two goals in quick succession. John McGinn scored with a low shot from around 20 yards in the 49th minute, followed by Emiliano Buendia's close-range finish just two minutes later.
