Dylan Samberg is set to make his season debut for the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday after recovering from a broken wrist. The 26-year-old defenseman sustained the injury during a preseason game against the Calgary Flames on September 27 when he was hit into the boards by Ryan Lomberg. This injury forced Samberg to miss the first 16 games of the season.

Jets coach Scott Arniel initially announced on September 29 that Samberg would be sidelined for 6-8 weeks due to the injury. The loss of Samberg was a significant blow to the Jets' defensive lineup, as he has become a key player for the team.

Samberg's return is expected to provide a boost to the Jets' defense, which hasn't performed as well as it had in the past two seasons. Last season, Samberg averaged 21:08 of ice time and led the team with a plus-34 rating. Much of Samberg's success is attributed to his chemistry with Neal Pionk, with whom he is likely to resume his place in the top-four defensive pairing. Their seamless coordination on the ice is enhanced by their shared Minnesota connection.

Last season was a career year for Samberg, as he recorded career highs with six goals and 20 points in 60 games. He also tied for sixth in the NHL with a plus-34 rating. In addition to his contributions at even strength, Samberg has become a crucial part of Winnipeg's penalty kill, utilizing his size, mobility, and shot-blocking ability to shut down opponents.

Samberg's absence has created a noticeable void in the Jets' defensive corps, highlighting his importance to the team's structure. In the past, Samberg has dealt with injury concerns. He missed seven weeks last season after breaking his foot while blocking a shot from Steven Stamkos on November 23.

The Winnipeg Jets signed Samberg to a three-year, $17.25 million contract on July 30. Selected in the second round (No. 43 overall) of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, Samberg has nine goals and 51 points in 216 NHL games, all with Winnipeg.

With Samberg back in the lineup, the Jets hope to regain the depth and stability that made their blue line one of the league's best over the past two seasons. This should provide a boost both at even strength and on special teams.
