Winnipeg Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey is currently listed as day-to-day with an undisclosed injury. The injury occurred late in the third period of Saturday night's game against the Minnesota Wild. Morrissey was boarded from behind by Minnesota's Joel Eriksson Ek, a hit that went unpenalized, much to the dismay of Jets head coach Scott Arniel.
In the aftermath of the hit, Morrissey's defensive partner, Dylan DeMelo, received a cross-checking minor for pursuing Eriksson Ek. The Wild capitalized on the ensuing power play, tying the game with just 22 seconds remaining and ultimately winning 4-3 in overtime.
Morrissey's absence is a significant blow to the Jets' lineup. In 36 games this season, the top-pairing defenseman has recorded six goals and 24 assists, totaling 30 points. He also averages 24:21 of ice time per game.
The Jets are currently struggling with a five-game losing streak and hold a record of 15-17-4. They sit seventh in the Central Division, five points out of a wild-card spot, and are tied for the second-fewest points in the league.
Coach Arniel confirmed Morrissey did not practice on Sunday. The team faces a challenging schedule to close out 2025, with upcoming games against the Edmonton Oilers and Detroit Red Wings on Monday and Wednesday, respectively. Morrissey's availability for these games remains uncertain.
This isn't the first time Morrissey has faced injury setbacks. During the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, he sustained a knee injury in Game 6 against the Dallas Stars. He also missed a game earlier in the playoffs due to an upper-body injury sustained in Game 7 against the St. Louis Blues. Despite these past issues, Morrissey had fully recovered from his knee injury and was expected to enter training camp without restrictions, according to an interview with Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Free Press in August.
The Jets will need to find a way to overcome Morrissey's absence if they hope to turn their season around and secure a playoff spot.
