AIFF Seeks AFC Decision on ISL Club Continental Slots and Addressing Game Concerns: A Report

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is currently awaiting a crucial decision from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) regarding the continental slots for Indian Super League (ISL) clubs. This uncertainty arises from the potential for a shortened ISL season, prompting concerns about whether clubs will meet the AFC's mandatory match requirements for continental competition eligibility.

Under current AFC regulations, domestic leagues must have a minimum number of matches and a specified duration to qualify for continental slots. The proposed format for the 2025-26 ISL season involves holding the league in two or three centralized venues, which is expected to limit teams to around 15 matches. This has led to concerns among clubs about retaining India's two AFC Champions League 2 slots.

Traditionally, India has two slots in the AFC Champions League Two, one for the ISL Shield winners and another in the playoff for Super Cup victors. However, these slots are contingent upon clubs meeting the AFC's minimum requirements. The AIFF has indicated that it will request special consideration from the AFC, citing extraordinary circumstances.

The ISL clubs have also sought clarity on several other issues, including funding, revenue sharing, broadcast arrangements, and the overall financial sustainability of the proposed model. With the Master Rights Agreement between the AIFF and Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) having expired, the clubs are seeking assurances that the AIFF will fully underwrite the league's expenses if needed.

The AFC's club competition slots are governed by a coefficient system that considers the performance of clubs in continental competitions over an eight-year period. India's performance in this regard has been lacking, with Indian clubs failing to consistently win matches in continental competitions between 2017 and 2025. As a result, India's ranking in the AFC West Region has fallen, jeopardizing direct entry into the AFC Champions League Elite and AFC Champions League Two.

The AIFF's panel is engaging in discussions with representatives from several ISL clubs to address these concerns and find a way forward. The clubs have expressed their willingness to participate in the short-term league, provided that it is aligned with a clear long-term plan. However, they are also seeking more details on the financial implications of the proposed format. With the proposed season start date fast approaching, stakeholders are hoping for a swift resolution to these issues. The future of the 2025-26 ISL season remains uncertain, pending further clarity from the AFC and the resolution of key operational and financial questions.
