2026 World Juniors: Latvia and Switzerland Aim for Shocking Victories on a Calm Day 3.

As the 2026 World Junior Championship (WJC) in Minnesota progresses, Day 3 presents a more subdued schedule with only two games, yet both contests offer the potential for upsets.

Sweden vs. Switzerland (1:00 PM CST)

Sweden is aiming to build on their opening victory against Slovakia. In their first game, Sweden's top players, including Anton Frondell (Chicago Blackhawks), Ivar Stenberg, and Viktor Eklund (New York Islanders), led the way to a 3-2 win. Facing a Swiss team perceived to lack top-end skill, the Swedes will likely seek offensive contributions from throughout their lineup. It will be interesting to see which players on the back end step up, especially with the departure of veterans like Axel Sandin-Pellikka (Detroit Red Wings) and Theo Lindstein (Vancouver Canucks).

Switzerland, despite ultimately losing 2-1, put up a tougher fight against the United States than many anticipated. While the Swiss may not possess the same level of overall talent as Sweden, they demonstrated a strong team defense capable of slowing down a high-powered offense. To have a chance against Sweden, they’ll need to maintain defensive discipline, forcing the play to the outside and keeping the Swedes out of high-danger areas. Goaltender Christian Kirsch (San Jose Sharks) had an outstanding performance against the United States. If he starts again, he will need to replicate that performance for Switzerland to have a chance at pulling off an upset.

Puck Prose predicts that Sweden will win the game with a score of 3-1, while still saying that Switzerland can make life miserable for Sweden as the game goes on.

Finland vs. Latvia (3:30 PM CST)

Finland started their tournament with a 6-2 victory over Denmark. They will be looking to continue their winning ways against Latvia.

Latvia is looking for their first win of the tournament. Like Switzerland, Latvia lost their first game by a single goal against a medal contender. Latvia is coming off of a 2025 tournament where they upset Team Canada. Bruno Osmanis and Olivers Mūrnieks are expected to be relied on as forwards. Defenceman Darels Uljanskis (ANA) is one of two draftees on the Latvia roster. Alberts Šmits, a top 2026 draft-eligible, will likely join Uljanskis on the top defensive pairing.

Team Latvia is known for their physical play, defensive structure, relentless work ethic, and growing skill level. They have a reputation for being one of the most competitive and emotionally driven teams in the tournament and are capable of upsetting higher-ranked nations.

Puck Prose predicts that Finland will win this game comfortably.
