St. Paul, Minnesota – In a compelling match at the Grand Casino Arena on December 28, 2025, Sweden defeated Switzerland 4-2 in the 2026 World Junior Championship. The victory marks Sweden's second win of the tournament, while Switzerland is still seeking their first.
Sweden jumped to an early lead when Eric Nilson scored just 53 seconds into the game, assisted by Leo Sahlin Wallenius. Switzerland responded later in the first period with a goal from Beni Waidacher, assisted by Leon Muggli and Daniil Ustinkov, leveling the score at 1-1. The score remained tied until the second period's final minutes.
Lars Steiner scored late in the second period, giving Switzerland a 2-1 lead. However, Sweden quickly retaliated in the third period. Viggo Björck scored within the first minute, assisted by Alfons Freij and Anton Frondell, tying the game at 2-2. Moments later, Lucas Pettersson scored, assisted by Liam Danielsson and Nilson, putting Sweden back in the lead 3-2. Björck sealed the win for Sweden with an empty-net goal in the final minute, his second of the game, with Freij and Frondell assisting.
Sweden's Anton Frondell (Chicago Blackhawks) and Ivar Stenberg (2026 draft eligible) had previously contributed a goal and an assist each in their opening game against Slovakia, which they won 3-2.
Looking ahead, Sweden will face Germany on December 29. Switzerland will face Germany on December 30.
