BCCI Discussing Captaincy with Rohit, Iyer Possibly Stepping Up in T20Is: Report

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly set to hold crucial discussions regarding the future of India's captaincy, with a focus on Rohit Sharma's role and the potential for Shreyas Iyer to take on a leadership position in T20 Internationals. These discussions are expected to have occurred during the squad selection meeting on October 4th, ahead of the white-ball series against Australia.

Rohit Sharma, who has already retired from T20Is and Tests, is 38 years old. Considering that he will be 40 by the time the 2027 World Cup in South Africa is held, the BCCI is likely to discuss his long-term future in the 50-over format, both as a player and captain. According to reports, the selection committee intended to address this topic with Rohit in person.

Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer's name has emerged as a potential candidate for a leadership role. Despite challenges such as injuries and exclusion from the BCCI's central contract list, Iyer has bounced back with strong performances in domestic cricket and the IPL. He is viewed as a strong contender for the future captain's role in ODIs.

Iyer has considerable captaincy experience, having led teams since the age of 22. He captained Delhi Capitals to their first IPL final in 2020 and led Kolkata Knight Riders to their third title win. More recently, he took Punjab Kings to the brink of a title. Currently, Iyer is captaining Sobo Mumbai Falcons in the Mumbai T20 League.

Iyer has spoken about the responsibility and maturity that come with captaincy. He has stated that he enjoys leading and embraces the challenges.

Iyer's form suggests that he is likely to be included in India's T20I and Test squads. Selectors may pick Iyer for the Australia series.

While there has been speculation that Shubman Gill might take over the T20I captaincy from Suryakumar Yadav, Iyer's recent performances and leadership experience have put him in contention for a leadership role.
