India vs South Africa: Shubman Gill's Doubtful Status Prompts Early Recall of Nitish Kumar Reddy for Guwahati Test

Team India is facing uncertainty ahead of the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati, with captain Shubman Gill remaining doubtful due to a neck injury. Gill sustained the injury during the first Test at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, where he had to retire hurt after facing just three balls. He was later taken to a hospital and diagnosed with a severe neck spasm. While initial assessments were encouraging, and Gill was discharged from the hospital on November 16, his participation in the second Test is still uncertain.

According to reports, doctors have advised Gill to rest for three to four days and avoid air travel, casting doubt on his ability to join the team in Guwahati on November 19. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) medical staff is closely monitoring his progress, and the final decision on his participation will depend on his response to rest and light mobility exercises.

In light of Gill's uncertain availability, the Indian team management has decided to recall all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy to the Test squad. Reddy, who was initially released to play for India A in their one-day series against South Africa A, will now rejoin the team earlier than expected. He is expected to participate in the optional training session at Eden Gardens on November 18.

Reddy's inclusion provides a backup option for the Indian batting lineup. The Andhra Pradesh cricketer had been released from the Test squad with the intention of gaining more game time with India A. He played two List A matches for India A, scoring 37 runs and taking 1/18 in the first game. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball could prove valuable for India, especially if Gill is unable to recover in time for the Guwahati Test.

Gill's absence was felt in the first Test, where India suffered a 30-run defeat while chasing a modest target in the second innings. The team collapsed for just 93, highlighting the importance of Gill's presence at the top of the order. If Gill is ruled out of the second Test, the team could consider other options like B Sai Sudharsan or Devdutt Padikkal. However, such a change would result in a batting lineup heavily stacked with left-handers, which could be a concern against South Africa's off-spinner Simon Harmer.

The second Test against South Africa is scheduled to begin on November 22 in Guwahati. India will be aiming to bounce back after the defeat in the first Test and level the two-match series. The team's focus will be on Gill's recovery and ensuring they have a strong batting lineup ready to take on the South African challenge. The time in Guwahati is 9:46 AM.
