Wild Ink Gustavsson to Extension: Solidifying Number One Goaltending Spot for Secure Future.

The Minnesota Wild have solidified their goaltending future by signing Filip Gustavsson to a five-year, $34 million contract extension. The deal, which carries an average annual value of $6.8 million, will begin in the 2026-27 season and run through 2030-31. This move comes on the heels of the Wild securing Kirill Kaprizov with the richest contract in NHL history earlier in the week.

Gustavsson, who is 27 years old, has quickly become a key player for the Wild since being acquired in a trade with the Ottawa Senators in July 2022 for Cam Talbot. Initially expected to serve as a backup to veteran Marc-André Fleury, Gustavsson soon proved his capabilities and value to the team.

Last season, Gustavsson started all 58 games he appeared in, achieving a 31-19-6 record with five shutouts, a 2.56 goals-against average (GAA), and a .914 save percentage (SV%).

In his first season with the Wild in 2022-23, Gustavsson played 37 games, backing up Fleury. He recorded a 22-9-7 record, with a 2.10 GAA and a .931 save percentage. His impressive performance led the Wild to sign him to a three-year, $11.25 million contract extension.

Prior to joining the Wild, Gustavsson was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round of the 2016 NHL Draft. In 2018, he was traded to Ottawa as part of a three-team deal.

With Fleury's recent retirement, Gustavsson is now the clearcut number one goaltender for the Wild, with Jesper Wallstedt, drafted 20th overall in 2021, expected to serve as his backup. Wallstedt is under contract with Minnesota through the 2026-27 season.

The new contract gives Gustavsson long-term security, including a no-trade clause for the next three seasons, which then converts to a 15-team no-trade clause for the following three seasons.

This signing indicates the Wild's confidence in Gustavsson as their goalie of the present and future. The Wild will open the 2025-26 regular season against the St. Louis Blues on October 9.
