Naomi Girma has been named to the U.S. Women's National Team (USWNT) roster for the upcoming friendly matches against Italy, marking her return to the squad after an absence. The Chelsea defender's inclusion is a welcome boost for the team as they prepare for the year-ending contests.
Girma had been sidelined due to a calf injury and has not played for the USWNT since their 3-0 victory over Canada on July 2nd. However, she has recently returned to Chelsea's starting lineup, paving the way for her return to the national team.
USWNT head coach Emma Hayes expressed her delight at Girma's return, emphasizing her importance both on and off the field. Hayes highlighted Girma's qualities as a leader and her eagerness to rejoin the team. According to Hayes, Girma contacted her several times to confirm her fitness and availability for the friendlies.
The USWNT will face Italy in two friendly matches. The first will be held on November 28th at Inter&Co Stadium in Orlando, and the second on December 1st at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. These matches represent the final contests for the USWNT in 2025 and provide an opportunity for the team to evaluate player form and fitness.
In contrast to Girma's return, forward Trinity Rodman will miss the friendlies as she recovers from an injury. Rodman, who has been a dynamic presence in the U.S. attack, is still working her way back to full fitness. Hayes stated that Rodman was not in a position to handle the demands of an important camp and big-game minutes, emphasizing the importance of her well-being.
The 26-player roster named by Hayes includes several other notable changes. Manchester United goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce is out due to an eye socket fracture. Jaelin Howell, a midfielder for Gotham FC, has also been included in the roster, marking her return to the USWNT for the first time since 2022. Additionally, Chicago Stars forward Jameese Joseph and Bay FC goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz have earned their first senior call-ups, while Washington Spirit defender Kate Wiesner also joins the squad.
These friendlies against Italy offer a valuable chance for the USWNT coaching staff to test tactics, build chemistry, and refine strategies. They also provide opportunities for emerging players to gain international experience while established players like Girma reintegrate into the defensive line.
With Girma back in the fold, the USWNT looks to finish the year on a high note as they continue preparations for upcoming tournaments and international commitments. The team currently holds a 10-3-0 record this year and a 23-3-2 record since Hayes took over in June 2024. Lindsey Heaps and Rose Lavelle enter as the most capped players in the squad, with Heaps at 160 caps and 38 goals and Lavelle at 115 caps and 27 goals.
