Valanka Alemao's Historic Achievement: Breaking Barriers as the First Indian Woman to Reach New Heights.

In a momentous achievement for Indian sports, Valanka Alemao has been appointed to FIFA's Women's Football Development Committee, marking the first time an Indian woman has been named to this committee. The FIFA Council officially made the decision on October 2, 2025. Alemao's term will span from 2025 to 2029.

This appointment is not only a personal milestone for Alemao but also a historic moment for India on the global sporting stage. As the first Indian woman to serve on a FIFA standing committee dedicated to the advancement of women's football, she will play a vital role in shaping the future of the sport worldwide. The committee is instrumental in developing FIFA's strategies and initiatives for women's football on a global scale.

Alemao's journey in football administration has been marked by several firsts. In 2022, she was the first woman elected to the All India Football Federation's (AIFF) executive committee in 85 years. Since 2007, she has also held the distinction of being the first woman CEO of a top-tier club in the country, Churchill Brothers FC. Additionally, she serves as the chairperson of the AIFF women's committee.

"This honour represents a significant milestone," Alemao stated, following FIFA's announcement of the standing committees. "This appointment is not just a personal achievement; it is a historic moment for India. By accepting this role, I become the first woman from our nation to be appointed to a committee by the world's most prestigious and largest sporting organisation".

Alemao has dedicated her professional life to promoting and developing football, both for women and men, across India. She expressed her commitment to continue her efforts with sincerity and determination. Alemao also expressed gratitude to her family, especially her father, Churchill Alemao, the owner of Churchill Brothers FC, for his support and belief in her.

AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey is the only other official from India to be appointed to FIFA's standing committees for the 2025-2029 term, as part of the Institutional Relations Committee.

Alemao's appointment has been met with widespread praise and recognition. Her story is an inspiration, showing that with hard work and determination, anything is possible. Her presence on the FIFA Women's Football Development Committee promises to bring a unique perspective and contribute significantly to the growth and development of women's football globally.
