Rangers eye Röhl for manager role following Gerrard's decision to remain elsewhere.

Following Steven Gerrard's decision to withdraw from talks about a potential return to Ibrox, Rangers are reportedly considering Danny Röhl as a managerial candidate. The Rangers hierarchy are looking to appoint a new manager quickly, hoping to have someone in place before their Saturday match against Dundee United.

Gerrard, who previously managed Rangers from 2018 to 2021 and led them to a Scottish Premiership title in 2021, was initially the favorite to succeed Russell Martin, who was recently sacked after only four months in charge. Despite positive discussions with club officials, Gerrard felt that the timing was not right for a return.

With Gerrard out of the running, attention has turned to other potential candidates, with Röhl emerging as a frontrunner. The 36-year-old German coach has reportedly impressed senior figures at Ibrox during preliminary discussions. Röhl's previous experience includes assistant coaching roles at Bayern Munich, Southampton, and the German national team. He also recently managed Sheffield Wednesday for two years, leaving in July 2025.

Röhl was under consideration for the Rangers job before Martin's appointment in June. However, some concerns have been raised about his lack of experience in Scottish football. Former Rangers striker Billy Dodds has cautioned the Rangers board against appointing Röhl, suggesting that his profile is similar to that of the recently dismissed Russell Martin. Dodds believes that appointing Gerrard, Derek McInnes, or Kevin Muscat would be more likely to receive unanimous backing from the fans.

Other names that have been mentioned as potential candidates include Graham Potter, Gary O'Neil, Kevin Muscat, and Sean Dyche. However, it is understood that Sean Dyche was not under consideration.

Bookmakers have adjusted their odds, making Röhl the favorite following Gerrard's withdrawal. According to Betfair, Röhl is priced at 4/5, while Kevin Muscat and Kieran McKenna are both at 19/10.

Rangers are currently 11 points behind the leader in the Scottish Premiership, after only winning one of their opening seven matches. They have also suffered recent defeats in the Europa League. The club's hierarchy is determined to find a new manager who can turn the team's fortunes around and compete for the title.

The Rangers board, led by Chairman Andrew Cavenagh and Vice-Chairman Paraag Marathe, are continuing their recruitment search and are expected to conduct further interviews over the weekend. The new manager will face the immediate challenge of preparing the team for the upcoming match against Dundee United and improving their performance in the Europa League.
