Following a hard-fought 5-4 shootout loss to the Dallas Stars on Saturday night, Colorado Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon didn't hold back when addressing the home crowd's reaction to the team's power play. The Avalanche were booed during the third period when they failed to capitalize on several power-play opportunities.
MacKinnon, who contributed a goal and two assists in the game, expressed his displeasure with the negative reaction. "I thought it was really good tonight, really good, a lot of great chances," MacKinnon said. "I know we were getting booed, I guess they don't really know what a good power play looks like". He further added, "We had a ton of chances and nothing was going in and we finally got one, so I guess they gotta boo us more".
The Avalanche went 1-for-5 on the power play, despite generating strong offensive pressure and outshooting Dallas 39-22. Stars' goaltender Jake Oettinger made 35 saves, denying several quality shots. Thomas Harley, Wyatt Johnston, Jason Robertson scored for Dallas, while Martin Necas and rookie Gavin Brindley also scored for the Avalanche. Brindley's first NHL goal was met with cheers.
MacKinnon's remarks have sparked debate among fans, with some defending their right to boo and others suggesting the boos were aimed at former Avalanche player Mikko Rantanen, who scored the shootout winner for the Stars. Rantanen was heavily booed during the shootout.
Avalanche coach Jared Bednar, despite the loss, praised the team's overall performance, calling it their best offensive showing of the season. MacKinnon's power-play goal was his sixth point in three games, echoing his strong start from the previous season.
