Millie Bright, the Chelsea defender and mainstay of the Lionesses squad, has announced her retirement from international football after 88 caps. The 32-year-old made her announcement on Monday, October 13, 2025, on the 'Rest is Football: Daly Brightness' podcast. Bright's decision marks the end of a significant chapter in English football, with tributes pouring in for the player who has been described as a "true leader".
Bright debuted for the Lionesses in September 2016 and quickly became an integral part of the team. Her international career highlights include winning the UEFA Women's EURO 2022 and captaining the team to the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup final. She also represented Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and was awarded an OBE last year for her services to football.
England head coach Sarina Wiegman lauded Bright's contribution to the national team. "Millie will forever be an England legend for what she has given to her country, and I could never have enough words to praise her impact during my time," Wiegman stated. "Whether she had the armband or not, she is a true leader. I know how much respect there is for Millie within the game – not just because she has won so many trophies but because of the way she conducts herself".
Bright explained that her decision to retire from international football was made to allow her to fully commit to her club, Chelsea. "The reality of the last decade wearing the Three Lions has surpassed even my wildest dreams," Bright said. "It's been beyond special for me, and I wish it could last forever. However, in football, all good things must come to an end, and with that, I have decided to retire from international football".
She further added, "For me personally, it's a decision I have taken to ensure I can commit fully to my club football and give Chelsea everything they need from me. I always want to leave an environment and team in a better place than I found it, so what better time to step aside and let the next generation of Lionesses come through after what they achieved this summer. I know they will go on to achieve even greater things in the years to come, and I'll be their biggest fan".
Bright was absent from the squad that retained the EURO title last summer, citing the mental and physical strain of the domestic season. Although she was an integral part of the qualification process for the upcoming finals in Switzerland, she has decided to permanently step back from England duty. During her international career, Bright scored six goals, and England never lost a game in which she found the net.
Bright's retirement follows those of Fran Kirby and Mary Earps, marking a period of transition for the Lionesses. While Wiegman expressed disappointment at Earps' decision earlier in the year, she acknowledged the goalkeeper's significant contribution to the team. Similarly, the England camp will feel the absence of Millie Bright, a player who has consistently demonstrated leadership and commitment throughout her international career.
