Hungary's strong defense thwarts Portugal and Ronaldo, delaying their direct qualification for the World Cup.

Lisbon, Portugal – In a dramatic turn of events at the Alvalade Stadium, Hungary denied Portugal an early qualification for the 2026 World Cup, drawing the match 2-2 in a thrilling encounter. Cristiano Ronaldo, who set a new record for World Cup qualifying goals, saw his brace canceled out by a late Hungarian equalizer.

Hungary, proving to be a tough opponent, took an early lead in the 8th minute through Attila Szalai, who headed home from a Dominik Szoboszlai corner. The early goal stunned the home crowd, but Portugal, led by the evergreen Cristiano Ronaldo, responded swiftly.

Ronaldo leveled the score in the 22nd minute, tucking home a cross from Nelson Semedo. This goal marked Ronaldo's 40th in World Cup qualifying matches, surpassing the previous record held by Carlos Ruiz. The Portuguese captain wasn't done yet, as he added another goal in first-half stoppage time, capitalizing on a cross from Nuno Mendes to give Portugal a 2-1 lead. This was his 143rd international goal, further extending his all-time record.

The second half saw Hungary increase their pressure, seeking an equalizer. Szalai nearly scored again, but his header hit the crossbar. Portugal, despite creating several chances, failed to extend their lead, with Ruben Dias and Bruno Fernandes both hitting the woodwork. In the end, Hungary's persistence paid off in the 91st minute when Dominik Szoboszlai found the net after a low cross from Daniel Lukacs. The late equalizer silenced the Alvalade Stadium and secured a valuable point for Hungary.

With this draw, Portugal remains at the top of Group F with 10 points, five points ahead of Hungary. However, they will have to wait to secure their place at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Hungary, who are hoping to qualify for their first World Cup since 1986, are still in contention for a spot in the tournament. The match was the fourth round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
