Los Angeles Kings captain Anze Kopitar is sidelined with a foot injury and is listed as week-to-week, the team announced Friday. The injury occurred during Monday's game against the Minnesota Wild when Kopitar was struck by a deflected puck in the Kings' 4-3 road loss.
Kopitar, who has played his entire 20-year NHL career with the Kings, announced last month that this would be his final season. The 38-year-old center has four assists in four games this season. He missed Thursday's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, after the team initially called his availability a game-time decision. However, it seems the injury is more significant than initially believed. He did not participate in Wednesday's practice or Thursday's pre-game warmups.
The loss of Kopitar is a blow to the Kings, who have struggled to start the season with a 1-3-1 record. They have lost their last three games.
In Kopitar's absence, Phillip Danault centered the first line between Andrei Kuzmenko and Adrian Kempe in Friday's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Quinton Byfield, Alex Turcotte, and Samuel Helenius followed Danault down the middle on the depth chart. With Kopitar out, the Kings are down to 12 healthy forwards.
Throughout his NHL career, all with the Kings, Kopitar has played 1,458 games, recording 440 goals and 1,282 points. He has led the Kings to two Stanley Cup victories in 2012 and 2014. Individually, Kopitar has twice won the Selke Trophy as the NHL's best defensive forward and has been selected as a five-time All-Star. He also ranks as the second-leading scorer in Kings history.
The Kings face a challenging stretch of games without their captain, including Saturday's home game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, followed by road games against the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday and the Dallas Stars next Thursday.
In related news, forward Corey Perry, who underwent knee surgery in September, participated in a full-team practice in a non-contact jersey. Goaltender Darcy Kuemper is also day-to-day with a lower-body injury.
