Adelaide, Australia – The recent shift in India's ODI captaincy has stirred considerable debate, particularly in light of the ongoing ODI series against Australia where Shubman Gill is leading a team that includes veteran Rohit Sharma. Former Indian middle-order batsman Mohammad Kaif has weighed in on the situation, suggesting that Gill might be feeling a sense of guilt leading Sharma, given the latter's successful track record.
India has already conceded the three-match series to Australia, losing the first two ODIs. This has intensified scrutiny on the new captain and the team dynamics. Gill, a young talent, has big shoes to fill, especially considering Rohit Sharma's achievements, including leading India to the 2023 World Cup final and the Champions Trophy victory earlier this year.
Kaif, speaking on his YouTube channel, said that Gill might be experiencing conflicting thoughts, acknowledging Sharma's unblemished record as captain. He elaborated, "It takes time for any new captain, now, for Gill, he has Rohit Sharma, a proven leader, playing under him. Gill also knows that Rohit Sharma has not done anything wrong as a captain. He was removed from captaincy. When Gill goes to sleep in his hotel room, he must be thinking that Rohit bhai has not done anything wrong".
Kaif further added, "He must be feeling the guilt inside, that people are backing me, but think about Rohit bhai, he did so well and won trophies, but even after that, he was removed, and I was named captain". He also noted that the team is in a transition phase and Gill needs time to settle into his role.
Adding to the complexity, some fans speculated that Rohit Sharma might be deliberately underperforming to undermine Gill's authority. This theory emerged after Sharma's low score in the first ODI against Australia. However, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar dismissed these claims, emphasizing that professional players would not risk their position in the team by intentionally playing poorly. Gavaskar highlighted the advantage for Gill in having experienced players like Sharma and Virat Kohli in the squad, providing mentorship and guidance.
Gill himself has addressed the rumors of tension with Sharma, clarifying that their relationship remains respectful and built on mutual trust. He has stated that he values Sharma's experience and seeks his advice, maintaining a balance between confidence and humility. Gill has also acknowledged learning from Sharma's leadership qualities and his ability to connect with players.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed Gill as ODI captain with an eye toward the future, seeking a long-term leadership solution. With Sharma focusing on fewer formats, the selectors aimed to give Gill the opportunity to take charge and prepare for upcoming tournaments, including the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Despite the change in leadership, the presence of Sharma and Kohli in the team is seen as a bonus for Gill. Their experience and guidance can help him navigate the challenges of captaincy and ensure a smooth transition.
As India looks to the final ODI in Sydney, Gill and his team will aim to salvage pride and end the series on a positive note. The focus remains on team unity and utilizing the experience of senior players to support the new captain.
