Columbus, OH – In a thrilling Metropolitan Division matchup, the Columbus Blue Jackets emerged victorious against the Pittsburgh Penguins, securing a 5-4 shootout win on Saturday night. Dmitri Voronkov led the charge with a standout performance, scoring two goals and contributing significantly to the Blue Jackets' offensive efforts.

The Blue Jackets, playing the second half of a back-to-back after a disappointing 5-1 loss to the Washington Capitals, displayed resilience and determination. The Penguins jumped to an early lead just 59 seconds into the game with a goal from Ryan Shea. However, Columbus responded with Charlie Coyle netting his first goal as a Blue Jacket, tying the game at 1-1. Anthony Mantha quickly answered for Pittsburgh, putting the Penguins back in front. Despite being down 2-1 after the first period, the Blue Jackets held a significant 16-7 shot advantage.

Kris Letang and Bryan Rust scored two goals in quick succession, tying the game at 4-4 with just over three minutes remaining in regulation.

With the score tied after regulation, the game went into overtime. Both teams had opportunities to win, but Elvis Merzlikins made a crucial save on Evgeni Malkin to keep the Blue Jackets alive. Ultimately, the game was decided in a shootout. Kent Johnson, Adam Fantilli, and Kirill Marchenko all scored for Columbus, while Merzlikins denied all three Pittsburgh shooters, securing the 5-4 victory for the Blue Jackets.

Voronkov's two-goal performance was a key factor in the Blue Jackets' win. Merzlikins also played a crucial role, finishing with 24 saves and shutting down the Penguins in the shootout. The Blue Jackets' ability to bounce back from an early deficit and maintain their composure in a back-and-forth game demonstrated their resilience. The win marked only the second time in their last 18 trips to Pittsburgh that the Blue Jackets have emerged victorious.
