The New Jersey Devils defeated the Colorado Avalanche 4-3 in a thrilling overtime victory on Sunday afternoon, securing their eighth straight win. Jack Hughes scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to propel the Devils to victory.
The Devils came out strong, scoring two goals within the first two minutes of the game. Arseni Gritsyuk scored the first goal, assisted by Timo Meier, giving the Devils an early 1-0 lead. Just 39 seconds later, Jack Hughes scored, assisted by Simon Nemec, extending the lead to 2-0. However, the Avalanche quickly responded, with Valeri Nichushkin scoring to cut the deficit to 2-1. Nathan MacKinnon then capitalized on a bouncing puck in front of the net to tie the game at 2-2 by the end of the first period.
In the second period, the Devils struggled to maintain their momentum, recording only three shots on goal. However, they managed to regain the lead when Jesper Bratt scored, making it 3-2. The third period was filled with scoring chances for both teams. With six minutes left in regulation, Brock Nelson tied the game at 3-3 with a goal assisted by Ross Colton.
The game went into overtime, marking the first time the Devils have gone to overtime in the 2025-26 season. It didn't take long for Hughes to end it, scoring the game-winning goal just under two minutes into overtime, assisted by Simon Nemec. Goaltender Jake Allen made 21 saves on 24 shots, contributing significantly to the Devils' victory.
The Devils' win streak is now the sixth-longest in team history. A win in their next game against the Avalanche on Tuesday would tie them for fourth-longest. The team's longest win streak is 13 games, achieved twice, most recently in the 2022-23 season. With this win, the Devils extend their lead in the Metropolitan Division to three points over the Pittsburgh Penguins and two points over the Montreal Canadiens for the Eastern Conference lead. Hughes continues to solidify his reputation as one of the NHL's top players.
