Newcastle upon Tyne - Bruno Guimaraes has issued a rallying cry to his Newcastle United teammates, urging them to focus on defending their Carabao Cup title. The Brazilian midfielder's challenge comes after their victory against Liverpool at Wembley in March, which ended the club's 70-year wait for a major trophy.
Guimaraes, who has become a firm favorite with the Toon Army since his arrival in January 2022, played a pivotal role in Newcastle's Carabao Cup triumph. He has expressed that winning the cup was "one of the best days of my life". Now, he is setting his sights on achieving more success with the club.
"For me, the cup is not enough. I want more," Guimaraes stated. "The most difficult part was the first step and we did that. I now want to finish second, get Champions League and win more things next season".
Guimaraes' ambition extends beyond just domestic success. He believes that Newcastle United has the potential to compete with the best teams in Europe and is eager to help the club achieve its goals.
"I don't know when but I believe we can win the Premier League one day," he said. "I'm happy, I'm very excited about the future of this club and I hope I am part of it".
The midfielder's commitment to Newcastle was further cemented when he got a tattoo commemorating the Carabao Cup win. An Instagram story read: “16/03/2025 always in my mind and now in my body."
Guimaraes also acknowledged the need to strengthen the squad for the challenges ahead. "We have improved a lot, but I think we're not at the level that I want," he admitted. "I think for next season, we are going to need more players to be honest with you because I think the squad is a little bit short".
Newcastle's recent Premier League form has been inconsistent, making Guimaraes's late winner against a tough opponent all the more vital. That victory provided a welcome boost and has shifted the focus towards their Carabao Cup defense.
As Newcastle prepares for the next round of the Carabao Cup, Guimaraes's challenge serves as a reminder of the club's ambition and desire to build on their recent success. The team will need to show the same determination and fighting spirit that saw them lift the trophy in March if they are to retain their title.
