Following the third ODI against Australia, concerns arose regarding Shreyas Iyer's health after he sustained an injury while fielding. India's T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, provided an update on Iyer's condition, revealing that he immediately tried to contact Iyer upon hearing the news.
According to reports, Iyer suffered a laceration to his spleen while taking a catch to dismiss Australia's Alex Carey last Saturday in Sydney. The impact caused internal bleeding, and he was immediately taken to the hospital. Initial reports suggested the injury was serious enough to warrant a stay in the intensive care unit (ICU).
Speaking to the media in Canberra ahead of the T20I series, Suryakumar Yadav stated that his first reaction upon learning about Iyer's injury was to call him. However, he couldn't reach Iyer directly. "The first day I got to know he was injured, I called him. Then I found out he didn't have his phone with him," Suryakumar explained.
Undeterred, Suryakumar then contacted the team physio, Kamlesh Jain, to get an update on Iyer's condition. In the following days, Suryakumar was able to communicate with Iyer, which brought him reassurance. "But I have been talking to him over the last two days. He has been replying. Agar woh reply kar raha hai (If he is able to reply over the phone), that means he is stable. It's looking good," Suryakumar said. He added that the BCCI medical team would continue to monitor Iyer.
News has since emerged that Iyer is now in stable condition and has been moved out of the ICU. Suryakumar confirmed that Iyer is now able to talk and reply to messages, indicating a positive turn in his recovery. "He has been replying and talking to everyone, which is good," Suryakumar stated.
Suryakumar also provided additional details, "When he caught the catch, it felt normal. But none of us were there. After going inside, they felt you have to pay attention. Then he was rushed to the specialist. And then we were informed that this has happened". He further added, "After that when we talked to him and when we started talking normally then it felt like it's a little better now. Because doctors and physios have said that it was unfortunate whatever happened".
While the situation was initially alarming, the latest updates suggest that Iyer is responding well to treatment and is out of immediate danger. The BCCI medical team is providing full support, and doctors in Sydney are closely monitoring his progress. Suryakumar Yadav's comments reflect the team's concern and support for Iyer, with hopes for a full and speedy recovery.
