Shreyas Iyer's condition is improving faster than expected after suffering a serious injury during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25, 2025. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is optimistic about a "surprise" recovery for the star batsman.
Iyer sustained a blunt injury to his abdomen while fielding, resulting in a lacerated spleen with internal bleeding. The injury occurred as he took a catch to dismiss Alex Carey. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where doctors promptly arrested the bleeding.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated that Iyer's recovery has surpassed initial expectations. According to Saikia, Iyer did not undergo surgery but a different procedure. A recent scan done on Tuesday, October 28, showed significant improvement. He is now stable, out of the ICU, walking, and eating normally.
The BCCI is arranging for Iyer's sister, Shresta Iyer, to travel to Sydney to be with him. Dr. Rizwan Khan, the board's medical representative, is overseeing his treatment. Suryakumar Yadav, India's T20I captain, spoke with Iyer and confirmed that he is stable and responding well.
Medical experts have described a spleen laceration as a delicate and potentially life-threatening injury due to the organ's high vascularity, which can lead to severe internal bleeding. The swift diagnosis and control of the bleeding were crucial in Iyer's case. The BCCI's head of medical services, Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, commended the on-field medical staff for their quick response, which helped avert a potentially critical situation.
Iyer is expected to remain under observation for at least a week and may miss the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, which is scheduled to begin on November 30.
Despite the severity of the injury, the latest reports suggest that Iyer is in good spirits and making remarkable progress. His teammates and the BCCI are providing him with full support, and his family's imminent arrival in Sydney is expected to further boost his recovery.
