Ranchi, India – Virat Kohli has responded to swirling rumors about a potential return to Test cricket following his magnificent century in the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi on Sunday. Kohli, who retired from Test cricket in May of this year, emphatically shut down any speculation during the post-match presentation after India's 17-run victory.
Kohli's statement comes amidst reports suggesting that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) might approach senior players like Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin to reconsider their Test retirements. These rumors gained traction after India suffered a 0-2 whitewash against South Africa at home.
"I am just playing one form of the game," Kohli stated firmly, dismissing any notion of a Test comeback. He further added, "That's how it is going to be," clarifying his commitment to One Day Internationals.
Kohli's match-winning innings of 135 runs off 120 balls, studded with 11 fours and 7 sixes, not only secured a crucial victory for India but also saw him surpass Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most centuries in a single format, with his 52nd ODI ton. His performance reaffirmed his dedication to ODI cricket and put an end to the conjecture surrounding his return to the Test arena.
During the post-match presentation, Kohli elaborated on his approach to the game, emphasizing the importance of mental fortitude over extensive preparation. "I have never been a believer in preparation. All my cricket has been mental," he said. He highlighted the significance of maintaining physical fitness and mental sharpness, especially at this stage of his career.
"As long as my physical levels are up and the mental sharpness is there, then you know it is fine. I took a day off before the game. I am 37 and need time for recovery," Kohli explained. He acknowledged the need for adequate rest and recovery to sustain his performance levels.
Kohli's remarkable innings and his subsequent clarification have provided clarity amidst the speculation. His focus remains firmly on contributing to India's success in ODI cricket, with his sights set on the 2027 ODI World Cup.
