Today in Hockey History: Jan. 14, marks a day filled with memorable moments and significant achievements in the world of hockey. From individual milestones to remarkable team performances, this date has consistently delivered exciting narratives for hockey fans.

One of the most notable feats on this day came in 1971 when Phil Esposito, then with the Boston Bruins, scored three goals in a game against the Los Angeles Kings. This marked his fifth hat trick of the 1971-72 season, breaking the modern-era league record for the most in a single season. Esposito finished that season with a total of seven hat tricks, a record that stood until the 1980-81 season. Just two years later, on January 14, 1973, Esposito continued his dominance by scoring four goals, including two shorthanded goals, in a game against the Buffalo Sabres.

January 14 has also been a day for goaltending milestones. In 1953, Johnny Bower, then a rookie goaltender for the New York Rangers, recorded his first NHL shutout in a 2-0 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. Terry Sawchuk achieved a significant milestone on January 14, 1962, becoming the first goaltender in Detroit Red Wings history to win 300 games.

Offensively, Butch Goring became the first member of the Los Angeles Kings to score 200 goals on January 14, 1978, in a game against the Atlanta Flames. Paul Coffey reached a remarkable assist milestone on January 14, 1994, picking up four assists, including the 900th of his career, as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Dallas Stars. Coffey became only the sixth player in NHL history, and the first defenseman, to reach 900 assists. Brett Hull recorded his 800th career point on January 14, 1996, while playing for the St. Louis Blues in a game against the New York Rangers.

More recently, on January 14, 2023, the New Jersey Devils made NHL history by becoming the first team to win 17 of their first 20 road games, with a victory over the Los Angeles Kings. Jack Hughes also set a franchise record for the most points through 43 games. Mikko Rantanen scored his 29th goal of the season, surpassing Joe Sakic for the most goals at the midway point in Avalanche/Quebec Nordiques history.

These are just a few of the many memorable hockey moments that have occurred on January 14. As the sport continues to evolve, this day will undoubtedly bring more unforgettable games, remarkable records, and legendary performances.
