The Boston Bruins have solidified their blue line by signing defenseman Jonathan Aspirot to a two-year contract extension. The deal, announced on Sunday, January 11, 2026, will keep the 26-year-old in Boston through the 2027-28 season and carries an annual cap hit of $887,500.
Aspirot's journey to this point has been one of perseverance. Undrafted, he spent six seasons in the American Hockey League (AHL) before making his NHL debut with the Bruins on October 28, 2025. He signed a one-year deal with the Bruins as a free agent on July 1, 2025. Prior to joining the Bruins organization, Aspirot played for the Belleville Senators and the Calgary Wranglers, amassing 292 AHL games. Before his professional career, Aspirot played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) for the Moncton Wildcats.
In 25 games with the Bruins this season, Aspirot has recorded two goals and one assist. Beyond the scoresheet, he has made a significant impact with a plus-15 rating, which leads the team. He also contributes physically, having delivered 42 hits, placing him third among Bruins defensemen. Aspirot is averaging 16:24 of ice time per game and has demonstrated versatility by playing on different defensive pairings, including time with Charlie McAvoy on the top pair. Before being recalled to the NHL, Aspirot also played five games for the Providence Bruins, where he tallied one goal and two assists.
"I'm just so proud for him. It's a heck of a story, right? I mean talk about paying your dues,” Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy commented. "That's a guy that just showed up and continued to get better. And I don't think there's any doubt in anybody that's watched him, the appreciation we have for him in here, that he's an NHL hockey player." Head coach Marco Sturm added, "Everything without the puck he's just..."
This contract marks the first time in Aspirot's career that he will earn over $800,000 annually and receive a one-way contract, meaning he will receive his full NHL salary even if playing in the AHL. According to AFP Analytics, Aspirot was projected to receive another one-year contract at $775,000, making this extension a significant raise.
The Bruins now have five defensemen signed through the 2027-28 season, including Charlie McAvoy, Hampus Lindholm, Nikita Zadorov, and Henri Jokiharju. With Aspirot locked in, the Bruins gain a reliable and cost-effective option on the blue line. Upon completion of this contract, Aspirot will be 29 years old and an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2028.
