Australia U19 World Cup Squad Features Two Cricketers of Indian Origin
Cricket Australia has announced its squad for the upcoming U19 World Cup in Namibia and Zimbabwe in January 2026, and it includes two promising cricketers with Indian roots: Aryan Sharma and John James. Their selection highlights the increasing diversity within Australian cricket and the success of talent development pathways in identifying and nurturing players from various backgrounds.
Aryan Sharma, a right-handed batter from Victoria, has been making waves in the Australian youth cricket scene. He plays club cricket for Carlton CC and has progressed through the state ranks, showcasing his potential as a top-order batsman. Sharma's inclusion in the U19 squad is a testament to his consistent performances and ability to perform under pressure.
John James, an all-rounder, has also earned a spot in the squad. James is a right-handed batter and right-arm medium-fast bowler. He was also selected for the provisional Under 19 Australian cricket squad. James's all-round skills and ability to contribute with both bat and ball make him a valuable asset to the team.
The selection of Sharma and James reflects Cricket Australia's commitment to fostering talent from diverse communities. Their journey through the Australian cricket system serves as an inspiration to other young players of Indian origin who aspire to represent Australia on the international stage.
Both players were also named in the Australia U19 squad that played a multi-format series against India U19 in September and October 2025. The series, held in Brisbane and Mackay, included three 50-over matches and two four-day games, providing valuable experience for the young players.
The Australia U19 squad also had a camp at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane, and a specialized spin/batting training camp in India.
Tim Nielsen, former Australian coach, is the head coach of the U19 squad. According to Cricket Australia, the final squad for the U19 World Cup 2026 will be selected based on the National Under-19 Male Championship.
