Canada has officially announced its 23-player women's ice hockey roster for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan. The team, a mix of seasoned veterans and fresh talent, is aiming for a second-straight gold medal after their victory at the 2022 Beijing Games.
Sixteen players from the 2022 gold-winning team will be returning, including captain Marie-Philip Poulin. Poulin, a veteran of four Olympic Games, has won three gold medals (2010, 2014, 2022) and one silver (2018). A fourth gold medal for Poulin would tie the record for the most gold medals in Olympic hockey. Other returning players include forwards Laura Stacey, Sarah Fillier, Blayre Turnbull, Emily Clark, Emma Maltais, Brianne Jenner, Natalie Spooner, and Sarah Nurse, as well as defenders Renata Fast, Erin Ambrose, Jocelyne Larocque, Claire Thompson, and Ella Shelton, and goaltenders Ann-Renée Desbiens and Emerance Maschmeyer.
Seven players are set to make their Olympic debut in Milan. These include forwards Daryl Watts, Jenn Gardiner, Julia Gosling, and Kristin O'Neill, defenders Sophie Jaques and Kati Tabin, and goaltender Kayle Osborne.
The roster is comprised of players currently competing in the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL). Each player on the roster has played at least one full PWHL season, with no collegiate players included. The team is coached by Troy Ryan, who also led Canada to gold in 2022. Ryan is supported by assistant coaches Kori Cheverie, Caroline Ouellette, Britni Smith, and goaltending consultant Brad Kirkwood. Turnbull and Fast have reacted to being named to Team Canada's Olympic roster.
General manager Gina Kingsbury stated that the selection process was challenging, involving evaluations at training camps, Rivalry Series games, PWHL games, and collegiate games. She expressed confidence in the selected group, emphasizing their motivation, passion, and pride in representing Canada.
Canada will compete in Group A alongside the United States, Finland, Czechia, and Switzerland. Group B consists of Germany, Sweden, Japan, France, and host Italy. The tournament begins on February 5th, with Canada facing Finland in their opening match at the Milano Rho Ice Hockey Arena. The gold-medal game is scheduled for February 19th.
